Biography I took my first photographs when I was about 12 or 13 years old. My mother worked in the sales dept. at a newspaper, and she would take me to work with her, where I started hanging out with the photographers. The gave me my first camera, a Nikon EM, and my own enlarger in the darkroom and let me loose. That experience in the newspaper darkroom shaped my love for Black and white photography and it's ability to enhance storytelling.

I Graduated from Kansas City Art Institute in 1996, with a BFA in painting. I majored in photography for a semester, before transferring, but photography remained a large part of my work. I started out making large prints on canvas using liquid emultion. Those images where influential on the content of the body of work the paintings were to become. I coninued to use photographs as reference
for composition, color, and the content of the paintings.

I find myself resisting the impulse to have my photographs in perfect, crisp focus; often working with completely out of focus or very soft focus images. I'm often drawn to Flickr groups such as "focusshmocus" and "sharpness is such a bourgeois concept". I see the images often as a combination of what I've learned and the the influences I've assimilated through both photography and painting. I often find myself looking for new ways to approach taking a photograph; sometimes even shooting through the viewfinder of another camera.

Although the advent of the digital age made it easier for me to pick up photography again, due to process being more accessible, I still find myself drawn to film. I picked up a few medium format TLR cameras and I'm shooting some rolls of 120 film. That process has influenced how I shoot digital now; I have become a lover of the square format.
